More Information

How the clues work
  1. Choose a real five-letter secret word.
  2. Take turns guessing your opponent’s word.
  3. The number shows shared letters, not positions.
  4. A zero rules out every letter in that guess.
  5. Guess the exact word to win.

A repeated letter counts only as many times as it appears in both words. PAPER against APPLE scores 4: two Ps, one A, and one E. A score of 5 can be the right letters in the wrong order.

Rules and controls

Choose a real five-letter secret word. Take turns guessing your opponent’s word. Guess the exact word to win. Invalid words do not use a turn, and you cannot repeat a guess.

  • Type a guess: Use the on-screen keyboard or your device’s keyboard, then press Enter. Use Backspace or Clear to edit.
  • Mark letters: Choose Mark letters, then tap a key to highlight it. Tap a letter in a past guess to cross it out; tap again to undo your mark.
  • Try different orders: Use Shuffle or tap two slots to swap letters. Select a letter, then Repeat letter to add a copy.

Your manual marks are notes. Letters turn green when clues confirm them or when you highlight them yourself. Letters from a zero clue stay crossed out. Your score is the number of guesses it takes to solve the word. Fewer is better; time does not count.

Simple tips
  • Start with different letters. CRANE tests five at once. Try repeated letters when clues give you a reason.
  • Use zero clues. If GHOST scores 0, none of those letters are in the secret. You can still use them in guesses to test other letters.
  • Compare similar guesses. If CRANE scores 2 and CRATE scores 1, N is in the secret and T is not.
  • Keep positions open. Matching letters can go anywhere. EARTH and HEART share five letters, but only the exact word wins.
  • Update your notes. Change manual marks when later clues prove them wrong.

How to play

Guess their secret word before they guess yours.

  1. Choose a real five-letter secret word.
  2. Take turns guessing your opponent’s word.
  3. The number beside each guess shows how many letters match. It does not show where they go.
  4. A zero means none of the letters in that guess are in the secret word.
  5. Guess the exact word to win. Matching all five letters in a different order does not win.
Repeated letters

PAPER against APPLE scores 4: two Ps, one A, and one E. A letter counts only as many times as it appears in both words.

Keyboard and notes

Use the on-screen keyboard or your device’s keyboard to type your guess, then press Enter. Use Backspace or Clear to edit.

Choose Mark letters, then tap a key to highlight it. Tap a letter in a past guess to cross it out everywhere. Tap again to undo your mark. Letters ruled out by a zero stay crossed out, but you can still type them.

Letters turn green automatically when your clues prove they match. For example, if BAKER scores 3 and zero clues rule out B and A, then K, E, and R turn green.

Use the five slots to try different letter orders. Tap Shuffle to mix the letters. Tap two slots to swap their letters. To add another copy of a letter, select it and tap Repeat letter. The positions you choose are only notes.

Ways to play

Play against the computer, choose Challenge a Friend to play on separate devices, or use Pass & Play to share one device. Send a private invite link or join with a game code.

The daily challenge assigns both secret words. Everyone plays the same computer game each day. A new challenge starts at midnight UTC.
